As part of his commitment to sailing a climate-conscious campaign, Ollie Heer has partnered with the Swiss Polar Institute to bring ocean science to life for young learners. While the Institute provides and manages the ocean data sensor on board his IMOCA 60, they have also harnessed the excitement of Ollie’s solo sailing adventure to create an engaging and innovative educational program for schoolchildren.

A Curriculum That Captivates

Designed for students aged 8-12, the Swiss Polar Class program delivers fresh, curriculum-aligned educational content every two weeks. Available in both German and French, this initiative has already captured the interest of 393 classes – split equally between French- and German-speaking schools – benefitting approximately 8,000 children across Switzerland.

Learning Through Adventure

Each module explores fascinating topics such as the importance of ocean currents, marine life, plastic pollution, and why the oceans are so vital for our climate and our planet. But what truly brings these lessons to life is Ollie himself. From the middle of the ocean, he sends personalised video updates, expanding on key scientific concepts while offering an intimate glimpse into life at sea. With the vast ocean as his backdrop, he shares firsthand experiences, from navigating extreme weather conditions to spotting marine wildlife, making each lesson tangible and memorable.

Connecting Students to Sustainability

Beyond its educational value, the Swiss Polar Class program plays a crucial role in developing environmental awareness among young minds. Through Ollie’s journey, students witness the impacts of climate change on the oceans and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of ocean conservation. By answering their questions and addressing real-world environmental challenges, Ollie connects abstract scientific ideas with a compelling call to action, inspiring the next generation to care for our planet.

A Resounding Success

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Swiss Polar Class program manager shared:

“It's great to see how many classes from all over Switzerland have taken part so far. We are delighted with the engagement from teachers, who in turn tell us that their pupils are fascinated to follow Ollie’s journey and enjoy doing the proposed activities.”

By combining adventure, education, and sustainability, Ollie’s partnership with the Swiss Polar Institute is not only expanding young minds but also shaping future environmental champions. As the program continues to grow, its impact will extend far beyond the finish line of the Vendée Globe – creating a lasting legacy of knowledge, inspiration, and action.

"Our environment is so important, and it is fantastic that my journey is able to encourage and inspire the next generation to want to understand and care about the world they live in. I am so proud to be a part of this programme" - Oliver Heer
